A friend of mine asked me what my favorite modern fantasy/horror theme book series were. I knew what my answer was of course, but I wonder what your answers would be.

Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are easily my favorite modern fantasy series.  The first couple novels are a bit rough, but Butcher gets better and by the 3rd or 4th, the series starts rocking.


Another modern fantasy series I like is C. E. Murphy's Walker Papers.  Main character is a shaman cop who deals with weird magic stuff.

Not horror, as such, but frequently with elements - Steven Brust's "Taltos"/"Drageara" books.

Currently I'm getting a real kick out of William Hope Hodgson's The House on the Borderlands.  It's part of a five-volume set of his works.  I hope the rest is as good.  It's about a century old, but it still counts as modern compared with Homer.

I'd also recommend Candace Jane Dorsey's Black Wine.
